Every successful fundraising efforts starts the same way: with one (first) donation. But like all things, starting is often the hardest part, but it doesn’t have to be.
To get you started, I’ve got a tip for you. I’d urge you to try this first, after you’ve customized your fundraising page but before you’ve shared it (if you already have, not worries, this still works).
So without further adieu, here’s what I’d do first…
Text your fundraising page to your best friend.
Not your spouse. Not your parents. Not your siblings. Not yet at least.
Think of the friend who has always had your back. The one who YOU would donate to if THEY asked you to. The one who’s genuinely excited to see you doing something meaningful. Send them a quick text with your fundraising link and let them know they’re the first person you thought of. I could even go something like this…(and yes, I’m an elder millennial so my text lingo may not be super cool but I’ll give it a try).
OPTION 1:
Need a favor! 😊 I just launched my fundraiser for Tap Cancer Out and was wondering if you’d be my first donation. Every dollar helps, and I figured I’d ask my favorite people first. Here’s the link: [Fundraising Link]
OPTION 2:
I know everyone gets asked to donate to things, so I don’t take this request lightly. But I’ve decided to compete at the Tap Cancer Out BJJ Open and fundraising for them means a lot to me. I was hoping you’d be my very first donor! It would really help me get the ball rolling. Here’s the link: [Fundraising Link]
Why?
Because they’ll be honored to help you get started. That’s what friends do. And once you’ve crossed that first hurdle, sharing your page with others becomes much easier.
Don’t get me wrong…in aggregate, you may be surprised by which friends, acquaintances, or even complete strangers support you in efforts like this and which friends do not. Don’t take any of it personally. Everyone has different financial situations, priorities, and causes they choose to support. A lack of a donation doesn’t mean a lack of support for you. Keep asking, keep sharing your story, and let the people who want to be part of your journey join you.
Don’t overthink it. Send the text. Celebrate your first donation. Then keep the momentum going!
